Expects the student to adapt to it Adapts to the student
Teaches moves adapted from animals Students build on their natural human reflexes
Competitive tournaments, katas, rituals, or choreographed routines Relies on “continuous motion” to complete the defense hence nothing is ritual or choreographed
Brings students to a high level of skill in a long period like 10 to 20 years Brings students to a high level of skill in a relatively short period
Ritual oriented routines based on old era of swords and arrows Incorporates modern realistic re-enactments so students learn how to operate under the stress
As a sport, it has rules and illegal moves No Rules; use everything you have
Does not adapt or learn from other martial arts Adapts and is a hybrid of mixed martial arts techniques like Boxing, Karate, Judo, JuJitsu, Muay Thai and other lesser known styles
Most Martial Arts in their traditional form are not realistic Self Defense systems Students learn to function during the stress and shock of a sudden, violent encounter/ Thus, it is excellent for realistic Self Defense in an unpredictable environment like streets

Comparison between Kali and FIST

KALI/PKT FIST
Kali is Philippine martial arts that emphasize stick and sword/knife fighting and is developed by individual. FIST has been developed to survive any situation by any means necessary.  FIST is the highly effective, Battle tested system of Defensive Tactics, Fighting Skills and Self Defense.
It is not evolving. FIST is an evolving system.
It basically deals with knife. FIST is applicable with shifting of tools and without weapons.
Kali is skill based system. FIST is a scenario-technique based system
Kali is a skill based system that develops principles of movement rather than specific definite reactions to specific situations. FIST practitioner will feel a higher level of confidence since he can recognize specific situations and have in stock a specific reaction.
Kali students take time to reach a high level of skill. FIST brings students to a high level of skill in a relatively short period.
Since it is skill-based system, performance of two kali practitioners may vary under similar circumstances. It adapts to the students.
Not in the case with Kali. FIST teaches one what is most effective to increase the amount of injury to your attacker along with minimizing your chances of injuries.
They don’t have ground techniques FIST has an answer to any given situations. The techniques can be used while standing which can be from all directions and all angles, sitting, lying, moving and on the ground.
Not in case with Kali. FIST will enhance practitioners’ knowledge of defensive tactics (Without firearms and with firearms as an impact weapon and of defensive tactics instruction.
